Case Study

Developed over a month and a half during 2011, Expedition Impossible: Morocco was intended from the outset to be a short-term promotional game which would raise awareness of the upcoming premiere and subsequent continued airing of ABC’s prime time reality television competition, Expedition Impossible.

Created by Mark Burnett of Survivor fame, the show was designed to appeal to an Indiana Jones style of adventure and featured competitors who were skilled in highly athletic activities. With this in mind, HitPoint collaborated with the Expedition Impossible brand team to create a game which would allow players to feel as though they were part of the action. Utilizing a Frogger-style mechanic, the game’s dramatic musical score, stylized visuals, and frenetic pace echoed the sensibility of the show while providing an engaging and challenging gameplay experience.

To add a twist on the classic Frogger model, players could complete a number of predefined style moves which would add bonus points to their score — the Twinkle Toes, for example, was awarded when players guided their character rapidly through six open pathways. The Brick Wall was awarded for bravery when the player allowed their character to linger in a row for a full second, and more challenging, the Moroccan Shuffle was awarded when a character lingered in a row for two full seconds.

Skippable teaser clips from the show were included at the end of each level.

Though the game is still live, it was only actively promoted from June 15th 2011 to July 5th 2011, as it was meant to support the show’s initial debut on ABC. During that time:

  • The game received 196,729 unique gameplays
  • Players beat 270,113 levels (of which the game had three)
  • Players spent an average time of 7:40 playing the game
  • 12,704 people clicked through to the show’s website
