Job Description

Your first job as a Game Designer is to be an open, expressive, and collaborative communicator in all mediums including:

Written design materials - Proposals, pitches, specs and design documents. In this role, you will meet with both internal and client stakeholders, provide guidance around gameplay, UX, and balancing, and write game design specifications and work with the art and engineering team to execute on the game vision. This may require coalescing input from multiple parties and boil it down to executable tasks.

Visual design materials - Mockups, wireframes, reference material. Games are a visual and interactive medium and so you must be prepared to express your designs and ideas through visual and interactive mediums.

Person-to-Person Communication - You are going to have to be able to explain your ideas to others both in person and on calls. You will also need to listen to the ideas of others thoughtfully and considerately, although ultimately it is your job to maintain the consistency and quality of the overall vision and decide if other people’s ideas have a place within that vision.

Games themselves - Your number one communication vehicle for the vision of your game is the game itself. You should constantly strive to make your vision realized in playable, polished form through the various builds produced during the production process. Additionally, you need to be well-versed in other games on the market that can be used as reference material to communicate your vision in a playable form.

Your second job as a Game Designer is to hold yourself and the development team to the highest quality standards and attention to detail during the course of development. These standards apply to:

Fun - Your games must be fun. Fun is an amalgam of elements and details that come together to create a complete and cohesive product. Maintaining a high bar for each individual detail is critical as is maintaining perspective on the complete end-to-end experience. You will be responsible for making sure the final product is fun. This might require supporting the team to improve a portion of the game, or exercising the courage to cut a feature that is bringing down the whole.

Design Materials -  You will be held accountable for the currentness, completeness and quality of all design materials ranging from proposals to specs. In many cases you will need to update these documents during production to keep them relevant, you are responsible for doing this in a timely fashion in the interest of disseminating new information as quickly as possible.

Game Polish - Ensuring that HitPoint is always producing titles that are attractive, awe-inspiring and current with an exceptional look and feel. In addition to having fun, it is of the utmost importance that our users and clients are wowed and moved by interacting with our games. Polish typically emerges through consistent care, attention to detail, and encouraging the team to take things just-a-bit-further. You are charged with promoting this attitude on all projects you work on.

Other Duties:

  • Report to HitPoint’s Creative Director through weekly status meetings.
  • Collaborate with the producer in charge of the projects you’re working on for required design responsibilities and tasks.

As part of this Application:

  • Please submit a resume
  • Relevant design materials and written portfolio materials.
  • Be prepared to submit work references.

  • 2-3 years of game design experience on shipped mobile titles.
